As part of Joshua Bilton’s show Undersong at SPACE (23 June – 17 Sep 2016), Bilton has collaborated with writer Holly Corfield Carr to devise a self-guided walking tour of sites of Portland stone in Hackney.  Holly’s commissioned text introducing Undersong is also available to read online or in the gallery.

The route is marked by six cairns, which are human-made piles of stones. Each cairn is numbered on the map on the back and corresponds to one of the six ‘cairn poems’ written by Holly Corfield Carr, alongside four ‘sound cairns’ created by Josh Bilton (cairns 4 – 6). The first cairn, marked by a mound of Portland stone, is to be found at SPACE Mare Street, London. The visitor is invited to carry a portion of the stone from the gallery with them on the walk which finishes at St John-at-Hackney Church where a second cairn is being built under the bell tower.
